Finding Your Heritage – Genealogy Research

Dive Into Your Family History

Long Hill Township residents have free access to the Heritage Quest database on the Library website with a Long Hill Township Library card.  Heritage Quest provides access to primary resources including the US Census Data, obituraries, some historical newspapers, family history books, public directories, and cemetary records/images.  These resources can help you identify relatives and obtain vital information to further research your family history.  Ask a Long Hill Librarian for help!

Even more resources are available to Long Hill residents with a Long Hill Library card at the Morris County Library (MCL)  and the New Jersey State Library which are further highlighted below.

The NJ State Library is an excellent place to start with their Genealogy Welcome page on how to start your genealogy research written by the State Genealogy Librarian, Regina Fitzpatrick.  Fitzpatrick provides tips and links on how to get started.  The State Library also has a wealth of videos and webinars to help guide you on how to research your family history and use the databases.

The Morris County Library provides residents access to a variety of historic info through vital records and census data focused on Morris County.  MCL offers online access to Heritage Quest as well but you have additional resources for use in the MCL Library only.  These include access to Ancestry Plus and the American National Biography database.

Another option for assistance in researching your family history is to join the Morris Area Genealogy Society.  They are a non-profit organization that provides a lively forum for resource sharing, mutual assistance, and instruction for those interested in family history and genealogy. Beginners as well as more experienced genealogists profit from monthly lectures on topics relating to genealogy.
